This tour is different from the rest. You get away from the noisy crowds and the busy galleries and visit the Vatican Museums, learning about the history of the Catholic Church and the Popes in our special “off-the-beaten path” Vatican Tour.
You will meet your very knowledgeable guide outside the Vatican Museum and begin the tour immediately with your skip the line tickets! On this special tour you will explore parts of the museums not usually covered on the ordinary tours, for example, the Gallery of Paintings displaying masterpieces by Raphael, Caravaggio, Leonardo da Vinci, Tiziano and many more.
Then, a real treat as you are show around the Carriage Pavilion. This houses historical vehicles used by various Popes: a Grand Gala Berlin made in Rome in 1826 for Pope Leo XII; the Fiat Campagnola, famous throughout the world as the car in which Pope John Paul II was standing on his attempted assassination in St. Peter’s Square in 1981; three other Popemobiles (Land Rover, Toyota and Mercedes 230 GE) and the Renault 4 donated to Pope Francis in 2013.
You then visit the Courtyard of the Pine Cone (cortile della Pigna) and the New Wing, which was recently opened to the public and where you can see an outstanding collection of ancient statues. This Gallery was inaugurated in 1822 to display the works of art confiscated by Napoleon and retuned from France following his defeat. Of particular interest are the statues of the emperor Augustus of Primaporta and a mysterious statue of the River Nile.
ou then have the opportunity to explore the rest of the museums but, as it is strictly forbidden to talk in the Sistine Chapel your guide will give you a detailed introduction before you enter. This is a “must see” and truly memorable tour of The Vatican City State!
